Fire-Retardant Fabrics for Hotels: A Complete Guide to Contract Curtains, Upholstery and International FR Standards

By Atlas Contract, Bursa, Türkiye · Published 14 October 2026 · Reading time about 9 minutes
Quick answer Fire-retardant (FR) fabrics for hotels are textiles that meet the fire-performance requirement set by the project's country, regulations and tender specification. Curtains, sheers and blackout are usually assessed under EN 13773 (Europe), BS 5867-2 (UK) or NFPA 701 (USA). Upholstery is assessed with different ignition tests such as BS 5852. These standards are not interchangeable: a report for one must never be presented as compliance with another, and every claim needs a current test report for the exact article.

Fire-retardant (FR) fabrics are an essential consideration in hotel interiors, where curtains, upholstery and other soft furnishings must meet project-specific fire safety requirements. Selecting the right fabric involves more than appearance: designers and procurement teams must weigh fire performance, durability, maintenance, certification and installation.

At Atlas Contract, we supply contract-grade fabrics and finished textile solutions for hotels, hospitality developments and commercial interiors. Backed by four generations of textile manufacturing expertise in Bursa, Türkiye, dating back to 1938, we combine fabric sourcing and production with made-to-measure sewing and project services.

What are fire-retardant contract fabrics?

Fire-retardant fabrics are textiles designed or treated to meet defined fire-performance requirements. They are widely specified for hotel curtains, sheers, blackout systems, upholstered furniture and other interior applications. "FR" describes a performance goal, not a single certificate: what counts is which test the fabric passed, which class it reached, and whether the report covers the exact article and end use.

IFR vs treated FR: how to choose

Inherently flame-retardant (IFR)FR-treated fabric
How it worksFlame-retardant property is built into the fibreAchieved by an applied FR finish, or an engineered backing or lamination
Cleaning durabilityGenerally not dependent on a topical finish, which is why IFR is attractive for curtains and sheers that are washed repeatedlyDepends on the specific finish, construction and test conditions
Typical hotel useSheers, draperies, some upholsteryDecorative draperies, coated blackout, selected upholstery
What to ask forTest report for the exact article and classTest report plus the cleaning or durability conditions under which it was tested

Neither approach should be assumed compliant without product-specific documentation.

International FR standards compared

Hotels operating in different markets may require different fire-performance classifications. This table shows where each system is typically used.

StandardWhat it coversCommon market or application
EN 13773Burning behaviour of curtains, drapes and suspended textiles (classes 1–5)Europe
BS 5867-2Flammability requirements for non-domestic curtains, drapes and blinds (Type A, B or C)United Kingdom
NFPA 701Flame propagation of textiles and films (Test Method 1 or 2, depending on weight and construction)USA
DIN 4102-1 B1German reaction-to-fire classification, where applicableGermany and related specifications
M1French reaction-to-fire classificationFrance
EN 13501-1Reaction-to-fire classification of construction products, e.g. B-s1,d0, where applicableEurope, building products
BS 5852 (Source 0/1, Crib 5)Ignition resistance of upholstered seatingUK and many hospitality specifications
IMO FTP CodeFire test procedures for marine applications; the correct part depends on end useShips and yachts
Important: compliance with one standard does not automatically establish compliance with another. A curtain fabric tested to NFPA 701 cannot be described as meeting BS 5867-2, and EN 13501-1 is not interchangeable with EN 13773 or NFPA 701. The correct test report, classification, product construction and intended application must be checked for each project.

FR curtains, sheers and blackout for hospitality interiors

Hotels typically require several window-treatment layers, each with its own function.

FR sheer curtains

Lightweight, translucent fabrics that provide privacy while maintaining daylight. Atlas Contract offers IFR sheer options in wide widths, including approximately 300–345 cm constructions, depending on the collection. Wide-width sheers reduce vertical seams in tall hotel windows.

FR decorative draperies

Woven textures, jacquards, linen-look fabrics and other decorative constructions selected for visual character, drape and specified fire performance. Whether a drapery is inherently FR or topically treated must be stated per article.

Blackout curtain systems

Blackout performance can come from an engineered blackout fabric or from a decorative face fabric combined with a suitable blackout lining. Two-pass and three-pass coated constructions may be available, depending on the specification. Blackout is not automatically flame-retardant: for lined assemblies, FR compliance should be verified on the actual combination where the standard requires it.

A complete hotel curtain specification should cover fabric width, finished dimensions, fullness, lining, heading system, track compatibility and installation conditions.

FR upholstery fabrics

Contract upholstery needs a different technical evaluation from curtains. Alongside relevant ignition-resistance testing, selection should consider:

Ignition results under BS 5852 often depend on the upholstery composite (fabric, foam and interliner), so a fabric-only statement should not be treated as a certified finished chair or sofa. Where Crib 5 or other upholstery requirements apply, the fabric and furniture-system specifications must be reviewed before confirmation.

Atlas Contract's upholstery offering includes jacquards, chenilles, velvets, linen-look constructions, wool blends and selected easy-clean options.

Specification checklist for hotel projects

Giving a supplier the following information up front avoids most compliance delays. The same questions apply whether you are requesting fabric, finished curtains or upholstery.

Fabric enquiries

Finished curtains

Upholstery

Ask the supplier to state each claim as one of four levels: available, can be developed, subject to testing or certified, and to provide the current valid report for anything described as certified.

Why fabric manufacturing and curtain installation should be coordinated

In large hotel projects, choosing a compliant fabric is only one part of successful delivery. Poor coordination between fabric suppliers, sewing contractors and installers can create problems with curtain dimensions, fabric matching, fullness, hanging quality and installation scheduling.

Atlas Contract offers an integrated approach that can include:

  1. Fabric selection and technical specification
  2. Sampling and colour approval
  3. Fabric manufacturing or sourcing
  4. Made-to-measure curtain production
  5. Blackout lining and finishing
  6. Project logistics and installation, where agreed

Depending on the project, Atlas can quote fabric-only, sewing-only, finished goods or a turnkey package. Site measurement, final shop drawings, sample approval, FR report review and installation access are typically the critical-path items.

Working with an FR fabric supplier in Türkiye

Türkiye is an established textile production location serving European and international markets. Through its manufacturing background in Bursa, Atlas Contract works with hospitality buyers, architects, interior designers, contractors and contract textile distributors who need flexible product development and project-based supply, with export documentation and logistics arranged per order.

Selected fabric programmes may be available with minimum order quantities starting at approximately 100–120 metres per colour, while custom colours, constructions and special finishes may require higher quantities. Production and delivery schedules depend on fabric availability, manufacturing requirements, testing, sewing capacity and project destination, so dates are confirmed per project rather than promised in general.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between FR and IFR fabric?

FR is a broad term for flame-retardant performance, achieved either by an applied finish or by the fibre itself. IFR (inherently flame-retardant) generally means the property is built into the fibre, so it does not depend on a topical treatment. Both require appropriate testing for the intended application.

Which fire standard is required for hotel curtains?

It depends on the project country, applicable regulations and the tender specification. Commonly referenced standards are EN 13773, BS 5867-2 and NFPA 701. Always confirm the required standard and class with the specifier.

Can blackout curtains also be flame-retardant?

Yes, but blackout is not automatically FR. Blackout fabrics and lined blackout systems can be engineered to meet relevant FR requirements, subject to product-specific testing of the actual construction or assembly.

Does NFPA 701 cover upholstery?

No. NFPA 701 addresses flame propagation of specified textiles and films such as curtains and drapes. Upholstered seating is assessed with ignition-resistance tests such as BS 5852 (Source 0/1, Crib 5), and results often depend on the complete composite of fabric, foam and interliner.

If a fabric passes one FR standard, does it pass the others?

No. EN 13773, BS 5867-2, NFPA 701, DIN 4102-1 B1, M1, BS 5852 and IMO FTP are separate systems with different test methods. A report for one cannot be presented as compliance with another.

What information does a supplier need to confirm FR compliance?

The product code, end use (curtain, sheer, upholstery, wall or marine), destination country, required standard and class, and any cleaning durability requirement. The supplier should then provide the current valid test report for that exact article.

What is a typical minimum order quantity for FR contract fabric?

For many standard qualities, a typical starting point is around 100 to 120 linear metres per colour. This is a guideline, not a universal rule. Custom colours, bespoke constructions, prints and finished made-up items have separate minimums.

Can Atlas Contract supply finished hotel curtains as well as fabric?

Yes. Atlas Contract can quote fabric-only, sewing-only, finished made-to-measure curtains, or a turnkey package that includes transport and installation, depending on the project scope and location.
