EN 13773: How Hotel Curtains Are Classified for Burning Behaviour
EN 13773 is the European classification scheme for the burning behaviour of curtains and drapes. It is often named in hotel specifications across Europe, and it is often confused with other standards.
What it is
EN 13773 classifies curtains and drapes by their burning behaviour into classes 1 to 5. A supplier should state a class only when a test report supports it for that exact article.
What to ask for
- The exact article code and colours.
- The class required by your specification or national rules.
- The current test report for that article.
- The lining or assembly, if the curtain is lined.
- The cleaning durability, if it matters for your project.
Not interchangeable with other systems
BS 5867-2 (UK), NFPA 701 (USA), DIN 4102-1 B1 (Germany) and M1 (France) are separate systems. EN 13501-1 B-s1,d0 is a reaction-to-fire classification for construction products where applicable, and it is not interchangeable with EN 13773 or NFPA 701. Passing one does not mean passing another.
Practical tips
- Name the class in your request for quotation rather than writing only "EN 13773 compliant".
- Ask for the report before ordering, not after delivery.
- For lined curtains, check whether the combination has been tested.
- Keep the reports in the project file for handover.
