Blackout vs Dimout Fabrics for Hotel Guest Rooms

Both blackout and dimout fabrics reduce light in guest rooms, but they do different jobs and suit different rooms.

Blackout

Blackout fabrics are designed to block light almost completely. Common constructions are two-pass or three-pass coated fabrics. They suit rooms exposed to street light or strong sun, and guests who need a dark room to sleep.

Dimout

Dimout fabrics soften daylight and reduce glare while keeping the room feeling bright and airy. They suit rooms where total darkness is not wanted or where a lighter feel is part of the design.

Choosing for a hotel

Fire performance is separate

A fabric being blackout or dimout says nothing about its flame retardancy. Blackout is not automatically IFR, and compliance depends on the construction and test evidence for the exact article. State the required standard in the specification (see our guides to BS 5867-2 and NFPA 701).

Atlas Contract supplies blackout and dimout fabrics and can sew them into finished lined curtains for hotel projects. Send us the room schedule or fabric requirement to start.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between blackout and dimout?

Blackout blocks light almost completely, usually through a two-pass or three-pass coating. Dimout reduces and softens light while keeping the room bright.

Is blackout fabric fire retardant?

Not by default. Fire performance depends on the actual construction and a test report for the article.

Can I combine sheers with blackout curtains?

Yes. Layering a sheer with a blackout or dimout drape is common in hotel rooms.
